Freehand is a creative collaboration between Danni Paviour-Smith & Matt Eastwell. Matt grew up in the hills of Perth and Danni in dairy country on the north island of New Zealand. Free spirits both and with a deep and mutual love of music and nature, the couple produce an electric suite of wines. Their winery is based in the beautiful hamlet of Denmark, WA. All wines are estate grown, bio-dynamically farmed (since 2007) and made without any additions (no sulphur since 2010).
After studying winemaking in 2004, Matt purchased the Freehand vineyard, with the help of his family in 2007 and set about converting the conventionally grown vineyard to organic and biodynamic practices. In 2010, frustrated by the treatment of the grape grower by wineries purchasing grapes, Matt collaborated with local small batch Porongorup winery Fernbrook to make a No SO2 experimental batch of Shiraz – the first Freehand wine!
Experimentation and innovation are the pulse of Freehand – the couple have spent years honing their craft and confidently produce a line-up utterly delicious, serious yet light-hearted wines that we believe must be some of the leading zero-addition wines in Australia. There is precision and clarity in these wines, depth and subtlety, a whole lot of love and absolutely nothing else added.
